The empowered employee in a biotechnology company: a case study
Article Abstract:
A case study of empowerment in production and inventory management in a biotechnology firm is presented. The dynamic tensionsbetween the planning department and the production department are discussed. While the planning department provides key inputs in attaining higher manufacturing performance levels, the production staff must also be active participants in the production and inventory management process.

An interactive BASIC computer program featuring user-friendly menus for the joint selection of purchase order quantity and management of deliveries in a quantity discount/just-in-time systems can help manufacturers control costs. The approach, however, can be improved to enhance cost minimization by simultaneously selecting purchase order quantity and number of deliveries to simplify calculations.
