Close air support in the U.S. Marine Corps: a FAC's perspective

Article Abstract:

The role played by the forward air controller (FAC) attached to 1st Battalion, 2d Marines, Alpha Company, 8th Tanks in the battle of An Nasiriyah that ensued during a rescue of ambushed Army personnel is described. Some observations and suggestions have been provided based on the incident with the aim to review the systems, policies, doctrines and procedures that relate to close air support (CAS) in the Marine Corps.

Fix Recon, USSOCom, and the future of the Corps: food for thought

Article Abstract:

The fix ground recon initiative aimed at fixing noted deficiencies in the reconnaissance community and the expansion of the Marine Corps' relationship and interoperability with the U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCom) have been described. The interoperability initiatives between the Marine Corps and USSOCom will ensure the usage of Marine air-ground task forces (MAGTF) to their full potential.

The growing importance of basic research to the Marine Corps' Future

Article Abstract:

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) in the US has set aside a portion of its basic research budget to help the Marine Corps' start planning for the future through the encouragement of fundamental discovery in select areas. Some of the areas in which progress is made are mathematical techniques, novel techniques and fuel cell, battery and energy harvesting technologies.
