Debate rages as military seeks to counter transport aircraft threat

Article Abstract:

Man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) which were originally designed to protect deployed infantry against fast-jet attackers have become a serious threat to helicopters as they widely available to non-state and terrorist groups and are easily carried into the vicinity of an airport. Several arguments on the deployment of a counter-MANPADS system have compelled the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to come up with plans for deploying directed infrared countermeasures (DIRCM) and instead, to launch an Emerging Counter-MANPADS Technologies (ECMT) program in April 2006.
