East Asia shores up its energy security
Article Abstract:
The growing demand for power in Asia and the US, together with the threats from conflict in the Middle East and terrorism to the global oil and gas trade, has re-emphasized the importance of energy security to Pacific Rim countries. East Asian importers, in their quest for security of supply, are looking for alternatives to oil from the Middle East, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) is proving to be a popular solution.

Dili dallies on oil projects

The attempts of Dili government that is looking to potential oil revenues of up to US $40 billion over three decades as the key to East TimorEs economic development and the means to allay growing domestic discontent, are discussed. However, two January announcements made by backers of petroleum projects in the Timor Sea illustrate the obstacles to the development of the basin's oil and gas reserves.

Venezuela uses anti-US rhetoric to shore up popular support
Article Abstract:
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez' anti-U.S. rhetoric has become increasingly hostile as he is playing up his country's strengthening links with Cuba, but also knows that he cannot risk the lucrative oil relationship between the two countries. His aggressive foreign policy stems mainly from his domestic situation, as he is struggling to increase his support by playing on existing anti-U.S. sentiment.
