Fire force: vertical envelopment during the Rhodesian War
Article Abstract:
The Rhodesian War between 1962-1980 forced the government to deploy 12- month conscripts and regular volunteers of the army, air force and police units against insurgents from two Communist-supported factions with enclaves in Zambia and Mozambique. A study of the techniques and assets used by the Rhodesian Fire Force to support vertical envelopment strategies against rebel troops highlights the advantages inherent in an air-ground task force. They also furnish valuable lessons to infantry unit commanders regarding the use of limited resources and manpower against unconventional forces in a counter-insurgency environment.

Operation IRAQI FREEDOM 05-07: 'Clear, hold and bold' requires active Marine participation, not hiding in shadows
Article Abstract:
The important activity of the US Marines in defeating insurgency in Iraq with the initiation of its third Operation IRAQI FREEDOM tour includes the security track involving a campaign to neutralize the insurgency, developing Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) and helping the Iraqi government. This can be done through a 'clear, hold and build' policy, which means to clear areas under enemy control, to hold areas freed from the enemy and to build ISF and the capacity of local institutions.

Marine corps fratricide reduction efforts
Article Abstract:
Preliminary evidence of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) casualty figures suggests that about 20 percent of American and 36 percent of British combat deaths were the result of fratricide engagements. Fratricide continues to be a threat on the modern battlefield and the U.S strategic interest by jeopardizing the participation of coalition partners in multinational operations.
