Fragile ceasefire holds out in the Philippines

Article Abstract:

Formal peace talks between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Force (MILF), the countryEs largest insurgent force, were slated for resumption, following a ceasefire between them in July 2003. However, the conclusion of the comprehensive peace settlement to flow from renewed negotiations remains a distant prospect due to the delays, distrust and an apparent lack of political resolve.

Brigadier General Victor Corpus, former head of the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (ISAFP), feels that the Maoist New PeopleEs Army (NPA) is the greatest security challenge facing the country. He states that the NPAEs aim is the complete overthrow of the government and the seizure of political power, and has the strategy and the means to achieve that.

Philippines peace process resumes

Article Abstract:

Peace negotiations between the Philippine Government and the insurgent communists resumed in February 2004 after a gap of more than two and a half years with both sides welcoming the dialogue. Top officials from both sides, attended the Norwegian Government sponsored talks held in Oslo, and are optimistic about continuing the dialogue again in March 2004 for further discussions.
