Article Abstract:
Gen Yves Crene, Chief of Staff of the French Army, believes foreign multinational peacekeeping operations would be the primary responsibility of the French Army. He said France is transforming the army into a smaller but professional unit with the absence of foreseeable threats to the country. He emphasized that the shift to peacekeeping operations should not be the cause for neglecting basic tactical work. As such, it is still necesary to include tanks and other military equipment in the assets inventory of armies.

Australia
Article Abstract:
Lt Gen Frank Hickling, Chief of the Australian Army, believes that the future operational missions of Western armies would mostly be in the form of peacekeeping and humanitarian missions, such as those in Somalia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Kosovo. Hickling adds that the Australian Army gained valuable experience about coalition operations during its stint in East Timor. He feels that operational efficiencies can be attained through the various capabilities that different coalition partners bring to a mission.
