Fresh options needed to calm the Strait

Article Abstract:

The issue of which nation controls the Taiwan Strait mirrors a bigger problem of how China and Taiwan should be politically reconciled. China has indirectly acknowledged Taiwan's insistence that a dividing line exists in the Strait for the purpose of avoiding accidents and minimizing confrontation between both nations since Jan 1979. However, Mar 1996 military exercises in the Strait by the Chinese government have cast doubt as to whether the China still acknowledges the existence of this line.

Taiwan stresses China's growing offensive options

Article Abstract:

A new Taiwanese report stresses that the security threat facing Taiwan is the increasing capability of China's military, navy and ground forces and it apprehends that China would use force or methods that fall short of invasion or full scale war. Political differences over how to proceed in its existing security environment have prevented the production of a consistent and effective security strategy, which is likely to further delay improvements in its ability to deter China.
