German subs give Israel heftier punch

Article Abstract:

The Israeli Navy has obtained the first of three Dolphin-class submarines from Germany. If reports that the submarines have been upgraded to carry nuclear-tipped cruise missiles are true, the procurement would give Israel its second nuclear-strike capability. Israel is scheduled to take delivery of the second submarine in Oct 1999 and the third in the summer of 2000. The new submarines will replace the navy's three UK-built Gal-class submarines.

Standing alone: Isolated Syria holds secret talks with Israel

Article Abstract:

The revelation that Syria and Israel had engaged in secret talks between September 2004 and July 2006, which resulted in an unsigned draft agreement highlighting four conditions for peace, gave rise to cautious optimism about peace between the two states. However domestic support for the Syrian regime continues to depend on an anti-Israeli agenda and this reality could negate U.S. and Israeli efforts to engage Syria in the peace process.

Has Mikoyan's MFI fallen too far behind?

Article Abstract:

The Mikoyan MFI's (multi-function tactical fighter) serial production and entry into Russian service is in doubt because the cost of building the system is too high for the present economy of Russia to bear. The system has been rendered obsolete during the suspension of its development program, making it another hindrance to the 5th-generation tactical combat aircraft's possible entry into the Russian Air Force.
