Malaysian Minister of Defence Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Bin Syed Jaafar Albar discusses in an interview with the journal Military Technology various aspects of his country's security situation, defense politics, international cooperation and development of armed forces capabilities. The minister said that regarding the global security situation, the end of the Cold War resulted in a multi-polar attitude in the conduct of world affairs. The Malaysian Armed Forces are conducting modernization programs aimed at countering external threats.

The Royal Malaysian Navy: A worthwhile and reliable partner
Article Abstract:
The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) is in the process of implementing a number of programs aimed at its modernization. These include the Patrol Vessel program, a 20-year project intended to replace the present inventory of three-decades-old ships. Other programs being implemented by the RMN involves the upgrade of existing communication systems, the purchase of new helicopters, the development of an information technology master plan and the upgrade of existing personnel training centers.

RAN Submarines - problems and plans
Article Abstract:
The Royal Australian Navy plans to retain the ONSLOW and OTAMA OBERON Class submarines while it is trying to fix the problems of the COLLINS Class. The incomplete outfit of software in the combat system of the COLLINS' Class lead boat has been identified as the problem trying to be overcome by the Australian Navy. The delivery of software is expected to be completed by combat system provider Boeing Australia Ltd by the end of 1999.
