Islamist groups develop new recruiting strategies

Article Abstract:

The analysis of the recent trends in the propaganda and recruitment of members into the Islamist groups indicates many important developments that are having an impact on the composition of jihadist cells. The developments include the use of both active and passive propaganda to spread the idea of jihad, an increase in the number of members joining versus being recruited, the strategic importance of Western operatives, and the increasing use of female operatives.

US makes Kosovo an 'administration priority'

Article Abstract:

Resolving Kosovo's final status has become the administration priority for the US. Most of the states involved in the negotiations do not want to see Kosovo gain full independence because of the ramifications for the rest of the Balkan region, but they seem to be prepared to endorse an Independent Kosovo if Serbia and Montenegro pursues an obstructionist negotiating strategy.

Annan calls for UN to remain in East Timor

Article Abstract:

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has asked the UN peacekeeping mission in East Timor to be extended for another year amid growing fears of potential violence if the UN withdraws when its mandate expires on 20 May 2004. Annan has suggested that the UN should maintain a 310-strong peacekeeping force to support the bureaucracy and the courts.
