Leaner, meaner depots

Article Abstract:

Air Force depots have embraced a new mind-set that has allowed them to better meet combat needs, becoming an unlikely model for Defense of Department's transformation. The most important practice at these Air Force depots is known as leasing that eliminates wasteful or unnecessary steps from manufacturing, logistics and administrative processes to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

The limits of outsourcing

Article Abstract:

The stakes are high for the United States Air Force (USAF), which expects to evaluate 51,500 jobs for possible outsourcing by decade's end. If this move produces monetary savings, the service would be in a position to finance new personnel spaces in areas of shortage, such as security police, intelligence specialists, and combat controllers.

Military depots, since the end of the cold War, have struggled to find a role in a downsized U.S. Defense Department. Gen. Gregory S. Martin, commander of US Air Forces in Europe says that it is only after the 9/11 terrorist attack that they have become 'engaged, responsive, and forward thinking'.
