New looking glass: Optics system technology would turn the ocean itself into a lens, enabling subs to perform some surface missions without a periscope

Article Abstract:

The U.S. Navy is experimenting with a variety of new optic systems that will enhance the submarines' flexibility and will enable them to perform some surface missions without a periscope. Arete Associates of Sherman Oaks, California has developed the Low-Cost Expendable Sensor (LCES), which is a small tethered camera that bobs to the surface and send images back, and the Virtual Periscope that would turn the surface of ocean itself into a lens.
