Of stealth, subs and SEALs: Vessels designed for the Cold War get new missions

Article Abstract:

The lessons learnt from a ten day Sea Trial initiative called 'Silent Hammer' that looked at how special operations forces (SOF) can conduct large-scale, extended clandestine missions while operating from a guided missile submarine are discussed. Four Trident submarines best remembered for their Cold War role as ballistic missile nuclear submarines or SSBNs, are being refueled and converted to guided missile vessels or SSGNs at $1 billion apiece.

Bedlam in the Balkans: How the U.S. can help bring peace to a region torn by years of conflict

Article Abstract:

The stabilization support provided by the United States (U.S.) has helped in promoting peaceful enforcement in the Balkan region, which is afflicted by violence and atrocities. The ethnic conflicts between various groups in the Balkan region can also be reduced by incorporating strong ethnic integration measures in schools, which were earlier adopted by the United States to reduce racial discrimination in the U.S.

4th generation warfare: Our enemies play to their strengths

Article Abstract:

The features of the 4th generation wars (4GW), such as the ones fought in Vietnam, Lebanon, and Somalia and currently in Iraq, are analyzed. 4GW is an evolved form of insurgency which uses political, economic, social and military networks to put pressure on the enemy and is rooted in Mao Zedong's basic concept that superior political will can defeat greater economic and military power.
