Russia tightens stranglehold on Baltic energy

Article Abstract:

The agreement on a natural gas pipeline running along the Baltic seabed between Vyborg, on Russia's Gulf of Finland Coast, and Greifswald, in northeastern Germany, has highlighted the increasing isolation of the three Baltic states from the Russian energy markets. Russia's Gazprom and Germany's E.ON and BASF signed a contract in the presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder on September 8, 2005.

Resource nationalism: Russian moves provoke unfounded worries

Article Abstract:

Fears that with the collapse of the Soviet Union Russia would pursue an anti-capitalist agenda prove unfounded as the country uses its natural resources as foreign policy leverage with a view to re-establishing its international status. This 'resource nationalism gives rise to different concerns as U.S. hegemony appears threatened but there are no signs that Russia would not welcome foreign investment.

Gas guzzler: Gazprom tightens grip on Central Asia

Article Abstract:

Russia has secured a contract to build a new gas export pipeline from Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan to Russia enhancing its monopsonistic position over the region's resources. Gazprom, a Russian state-owned gas company holds monopoly on the purchase of Central Asian gas, enabling the company to depress prices and giving Moscow the political edge over the region.
