The buzz about the Super Hornet
Article Abstract:
Boeing-St. Louis' new F/A-18E/F Super Hornet promises to be the primary feature for the 21st century's initial decade in the plans of the US Navy to upgrade its carrier air wings. The new Super Hornet, which is in the initial low-rate production levels at present, will have its initial production unit delivered late in 1998 by Boeing-St. Louis. The new F/A-18E/F aircraft is also scheduled to be operational in the year 2001 after the conduction of tests on its performance. The new Super Hornet has approximately 33% more internal fuel capacity and is 34 inches and 25 inches longer than the F/A-18C/D Hornet in its two-seater F and one-seater E models, respectively.

A number of individual programs and system upgrades are being incorporated into the Army's short range air defense system (SHORAD). The AN/MPQ-64 Sentinel radar is the key air surveillance and target acquisition and tracking sensor for SHORAD weapons in Army division and corps sectors. On the other hand, the Avenger is a wheeled SHORAD system which carries eight Stinger missiles and a .50-caliber machine gun mounted on a turret behind a high-mobility, multi-purpose wheeled vehicle.
