The lighter lifters

Article Abstract:

Light transport aircraft are required to complement large transport aircraft, particularly regarding smaller loads and shorter trips. These aircraft are forecasted by the Teal Group to account for 8.9% of dollar value sales in the global military transport aircraft market from 1997 to 2006. Among the contenders in the arena are the Alenia G222/C-27A; the Ayres Loadmaster LM250; and the the CN-235-330 from IPTN, which is shortlisted for the Royal Australian Air Force's Air 5190 requirement for a light tactical transport, along with the C-27J Spartan from Lockheed Martin Alenia Tactical Transport Systems, and the CN-235-300 and the C-295 from Casa.

Alone but unafraid -- the growing observation drone

Article Abstract:

The improved effectiveness of modern air defense systems, along with the high expense associated with crewed aircraft and the higher importance given to human life, is making the top nations use uninhabited aerial vehicles (UAVs) for tactical reconnaissance functions. Smaller countries are also considering their own systems, as the current role of the observation drone is expanding. The latest sales registered include a Romanian acquisition of six AAI Shadow 600s, and a $40-million order obtained by Israel's Malat Searcher for an unrevealed country.

A challenge: simplifying but improving the helicopter

Article Abstract:

Rotary wing aircraft are currently being developed to enhance aerodynamic performance while lessening pilot workload, lessen weight, vibration, detectability and operational costs. The developments which have made these advances possible include the introduction of composite and elastomeric materials in rotor and blade construction. Speed of helicopters are also being improved by lessening the local lift coefficient and increasing the Mach number of the tip area. Improvement of tail rotors are aimed at lessening external noise and accident risks.
