Transdniestr under pressure from Kiev

Article Abstract:

Transdniestr, although unrecognized by the international community, is independent from the central government and is a major source of illicit small-arms and ammunition, of which it inherited significant quantities at the collapse of the Soviet Union. Ukrainian authorities have promised the European Union (EU) that they would boost efforts to combat trafficking emanating from the breakaway region, while the EU in turn has promised to fund such efforts, following a statement delivered in Kiev by Javier Solana, EU High Representative that the EU would send a 'fact-finding mission to review the situation in the border area' to prepare the EU for 'engagement.'

Nuclear fallout: International responses to North Korea's test

Article Abstract:

The UN Security Council has imposed economic sanctions on North Korea following the nuclear test by North Korea on 14 October 2006 but members are divided on how best to handle the nuclear state. There are doubts whether the sanctions will destabilize the regime or prevent further developments of its weapons program, and a continuation of the existing tension seems most likely.
