Twelve DDG-51s to go, DD-21s moves on
Article Abstract:
Ingalls Shipbuilding and Bath Iron Works have both secured nearly similar fixed-price incentive contracts worth more than $2 billion each from the US Navy. The multi-year contracts from FY1998 to 2001 call for the construction of a total twelve DDG-51 BURKE class guided missile destroyers. The service is to take delivery of the twelve ships, with six for each yard, to be completed by August 2006. Ingalls is to construct six of the destroyers and an option for a seventh ship to be built in FY2001 under its Navy contract worth $2,523,608,847. Bath Iron is required to build the other twelve DDG-51s with no further option in its $2,523,608,847-million contract with the Navy, which plans construction of a total of 57 DDG-51s before the follow-on DD-21 designed is introduced.
