US navy's TMD programme gets big cash boost
Article Abstract:
An additional $500 million will be infused into the US Navy's Theater Missile Defense (TMD) program in Fiscal Year 1999-2001. Defense Sec William Cohen said the funds are intended to accelerate the execution of the naval TMD program from 2010 to 2007. The TMD is intended to counter the long and medium-range missiles of North Korea, Iran and Pakistan. The Defense Dept will reassess the missiles defense systems of both the Army and Navy in Jun 2000 to evaluate costs, schedule, performance and risks.

US Navy seeks lightweight machine gun for special warfare operations
Article Abstract:
The US Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Div has announced its intention to acquire a new "5.56 Lightweight Machine Gun" for special warfare operations. The US Navy has specified an available/non-developmental machine gun that weighs not more than 13 lb and measuring not more than 44 in length. Other specifications are a belt-fed system with no provision fro attachable/detachable box magazines, cyclic firing rate of 500-750 rds/min and resistance from abrasion, impact and battlefield chemicals.
