What the QDR should say: The Quadrennial defense review must stimulate long-term change

Article Abstract:

The report summarizing the work of the 2005 Quadrennial Defense Review which would be sent to the Congress in February 2006 differs significantly from its two predecessors, the 1997 and 2001 as firstly it was conducted during the time of war, and secondly was conducted prior to 2005 and thirdly its challenges the responsibilities and authorities of the Defense Department. A short description on the issues that most directly affect defense strategy and the capabilities and force structure the US armed forces require to execute that strategy, and which are central to the strategic logic of the QDR are presented.

U.S. Northern Command: Newest unified command coordinates homeland security efforts

Article Abstract:

The new U.S. Northern Command (NorthCom) in the mountains of Colorado came into existence after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This command is assigned to coordinate the effort to protect the United States and its Canadian and Mexican borders, against terrorists and other threats.
