Fascinating machismo: toward an unmasking of heterosexual masculinity in Arturo Ripstein's 'El lugar sin limites.'

Article Abstract:

The role of the queen homosexual in contemporary commercial Mexican cinema aids the understanding of male heterosexuality. The categories of homosexuality, heterosexuality, femininity and masculinity, which were once static, are now becoming unstable. The cabaret dancer/prostitute genre has been the medium for projecting gender or sexual identities in Mexican cinema. The fichera films, which serve as a medium for the sexological transformations in the modern Mexican society, gained recognition between the early 1970s and the mid-1980s. The transformations include the public acceptance of homosexuals, the incidence of nudity in films and the increased use of foul language.

Rich and strange: the yuppie horror film

Article Abstract:

American horror films made during the 1980s and the 1990s are different from the classical horror and science fiction genres. These films specifically address the concerns and values of the affluent yuppie society that is caught in a period of recession. The evil characters in the horror movies are projections of subdued aspirations, like traditional monsters, and threaten materiality more than mortality. These movies also rely on the visual and narrative conventions of classic horror films. Films of both genres are compared and contrasted.

Seeing double: Stunt performance and masculinity

Article Abstract:

A cycle of films made in the late 1970s which include The Great Waldo Pepper and The Stunt Man, represents the emergence of the stunt performer in a dramatic way. These stunt men were potentially more masculine than the male star and were also more authentically connected to some of Hollywood's most symbolically powerful roles.
