Making contact: working with the White Mountain Apache on 'Indian Summer.'
Article Abstract:
Experiences with the Indian actors and cultural experts during the production of a full-length narrative entitled 'Indian Summer' are recounted. A great amount of research was done regarding the Apache through interviews, observations and personal meetings in order to give them proper representation. Meanwhile, the film's casting and overall production was created in such a way that authenticity of language and ceremonies were achieved.

Article Abstract:
A view of free speech as the paramount quality in motion picture direction tends to create an atmosphere hostile to limitation, yet limitations are necessary to discipline creativity. College teachers' freedom to teach and including values as well as technical skills in production courses are also significant considerations.

Most college professors in film and video production enjoy significant degrees of autonomy and develop individual approaches to pedagogical issues. Beyond those considerations, teachers need to clearly communicate the need for students to discover their unique senses of subjectivity and values.
