What a trip: the road film and American culture

Article Abstract:

The emergence of the road depict in their transition and content, the transitions in American culture. The films also reflect the ideology of expansionism, the advent of the automobile as an expression of individuality, and the emergence of a mass of restless suburban youth during the 1950s. The three classical film genres, the western, the gangster film, and film noir, helped in the development of the genre. However, after 1967, the road film deviated from its precursors by exploiting road travel extensively, as an instrument of social critique. Some films belonging to the genre are discussed.
