Article Abstract:
The future of a DVD format for audio may not be determined for some time. Questions to be answered include whether there is a need for surround music without video and the number of channels required. Dolby Laboratories and Delos International have issued a multipurpose demonstration DVD.

Sony's simpler sampling
Article Abstract:
Sony has adapted the 1940s-era delta modulation recording technology to create Direct Stream Digital (DSD), a potentially viable alternative to the pulse-code modulation (PCM) signal sampling method used to create most compact disc recordings. DSD's advantages over PCM are outlined.

Article Abstract:
Philips and Sony unveiled their DVD format at the Jan 1995 Winter Consumer Electronics Show, and observers were impressed with the DVD's picture quality, CD-type size, and data compression standard. However, Toshiba and Time Warner produced a competing DVD format later in Jan 1995.
