Article Abstract:

An evaluation of the Denon AVR-5700 THX 5.1 A/V receiver priced at $2,800 is presented. This receiver combines many of the features previously seen in products of this type such as Dolby Digital and DTS and adds the capabilities to receive THX 5.1 quality. The design of this receiver as well as some of its unique features are noted, along with the results of a sound quality test conducted with it.

There are many worthy features and the remote and interfaces are well designed. The unit has very low background noise and excellent ambience enhancement. However, the default ambience settings can cause for inaccurate results.

The Sherwood RVD-6090R Dolby Digital receiver is a moderately inexpensive receiver ($350) with the capability to to decode the Dolby Digital sound. This unit is easy to set up and has great power for smaller installations, but it only has two digital inputs and no connection for S-video.
