Restructuring work and family entitlements around family values
Article Abstract:
Changes in family law as well as changes in market work structure are needed to reconcile work and family. Currently the employment norm of the ideal worker conflicts with the norm of family care for children, resulting in the economic marginalization of those who care for children and more children living in poverty. As a remedy, wages should be treated as joint property by divorce courts. Moreover, the ideal-worker norm, which still reflects the traditional sexual division of labor, should be altered to make work and family life more compatible.
