Surround surprises

New technology in digital video and car audio are improving the surround, or 'immersion', audio experience. Toshiba's DVD technology includes Spatializer '3-D' stereo, which works to provide surround simulation with 2 speakers. Pioneer car stereos use a Sound Retrieval System offering tighter focus.

Some car stereo makers now offer separate components to buyers as alternatives to the all-in-one units traditionally marketed. The availability of separate components bodes well for consumers of high-end audio, but the lack of common interface standards remains a problem.

Audio equipment manufacturers have learned that components that are styled in any way other than the standard rectangular shape do not sell well in American markets. Several attractively styled components are therefore available in Europe, but are not sold in the US.
