The tunes of the English and Scottish ballads in the James Madison Carpenter Collection
Article Abstract:
James Madison Carpenter hoped to collect all of the music and lyrics of the British ballads whose lyrics were originally published by fellow Harvard folk music scholar Francis James Child. Carpenter transcribed the music from actual recordings that he made with a Dictaphone. The music of several ballads are presented.

'Dr. Carpenter from the Harvard College in America': an introduction to James Madison Carpenter and his collection
Article Abstract:
The life and research of James Madison Carpenter is recounted. He first traveled to Great Britain to collect folk songs in 1928 and was granted a Sheldon Scholarship to continue his work in 1929, after completing his Ph.D. in folk music at Harvard. During his career he collected around 2,000 folk songs.

The Child ballads from England and Wales in the James Madison Carpenter Collection
Article Abstract:
James Madison Carpenter's collection of ballads already collected by Francis James Child's was significant because Carpenter's collection included the music as well as the lyrics. His collection also contained some unique variations.
