The SD-3006 ($699) offers excellent overall performance for video, and Dolby Digital sound for movies on DVD is impressive. The player has both digital and stereo analog outputs, and music CDs sound less transparent and less detailed than Dolby Digital for movies.

Mass tape test: 51 cassettes
Article Abstract:
Extensive laboratory and listening tests of 14 normal bias, 23 high bias, and 14 metal cassette tapes reveal that metal tapes consistently outperform the other analog tape varieties. Exhaustive test data for each of the 51 tapes evaluated are provided.

MPEG-2 is a standardized technology employed to compress digital data to decrease bandwidth and storage requirements. The use of MPEG-2 in digital video discs and satellite TV is discussed.
