Toshiba Corp.'s SD-3108 DVD player has 10-bit video digital-to-analog converter (DAC), 24-bit/96 kHz audio DACs and many other features. Image quality is very god, coming very close to Pioneer's DV-09. At $699, is is $1,300 less than the Pioneer. It is an excellent performer with excellent CD audio playback, superb Dolby Digital results and very fine video measurements.

DIGITAL TV A View from the Couch

Philip's Model 9901 digital television, priced at $9,990, is evaluated based on performance. The TV employs rear projection and use 9-inch cathode-ray tubes. The audio can be customized to work with Dolby Digital surround sound and also includes an internal Dolby Digital decoder. The 9901 delivers good digital images, but for everyday NTSC use the set falls short.
