The Jun 1997 elections gave Jean Chretien's Liberal Party only a slight majority, while Preston Manning's Reform Party did very well in many parts of Western Canada. The Tories dominated in Atlantic Canada and the New Democratic Party also won seats. Regionalism appears to be on the rise.

New Brunswick Frank McKenna, reacting to cuts in federal transfers, has reorganized the province's health care system and made severe cuts in some areas. Privatization of some services, caps on doctors' salaries and limits on specialists have caused havoc with health care delivery.
