A Tax Debate Full of Hazards For Democrats
Article Abstract:
The Democratic presidential candidates competing for an Iowa caucus victory are engaged in fierce battles over an appropriate tax policy to sell to voters. The Democrats want to reverse Pres. Bush's repeal of taxes for the wealthy, but at the same time offer tax relief for the middle class. Because they advocate tax revenue to pay for government programs, they face the challenge of avoiding Republican Party reminders that the Democrats represent the party of tax imposition and burden. Howard Dean, who had supported repeal of all of Bush's policies, is now trying to appeal to middle class voters by offering some tax relief for them.
