A political columnist agrees with a panel of experts that ranked all 20 Canadian prime ministers that John A. Macdonald and William Lyon Mackenzie King were Canada's greatest prime ministers. He disagrees with several of the rankings, however, including those of Robert Borden and Pierre Elliott Trudeau.

Trudeau was the first politician invented by the media. He was an appealing, outspoken and original man. Renewed interest in him celebrates his style rather than his substance. His policies crippled the Canadian economy and alienated French Canadians.
