A gadget with status written all over it: in Hollywood, where image is all, a 'notebook' denotes techno-knowhow

Article Abstract:

Hollywood executives carry notebook computers as symbols of techno-knowhow and business dedication. The newest and sleekest products are preferred. For example, a Casio Computer Company Ltd Casio B.O.S.S. is acceptable. So is a 3.5-pound Dell Computer Corp Dell 320SLi. Apple Powerbooks, which are unusually user-friendly devices, are popular in Hollywood as they are elsewhere. Many users persuade their companies to purchase Powerbooks for them. Prices range as high as $4,000 or more. Computer technology changes fast, and one user who paid $3,700 for a 12-pound Toshiba laptop only three years ago, taking it everywhere at first, already feels out of date and now leaves his machine at home.

The search for humor in the workplace

Article Abstract:

British comic actor and writer John Cleese founded Video Arts, a company that produces management training films, in 1972. The company generated more than $6 million in sales during 1991 and has more than 50 titles in its library. While many would believe that the overlap between personnel management and computer technology presents managers with a significant challenge, Cleese does not have an opinion on the subject and admits that he is not personally knowledgable about computers. Cleese is intrigued by the opportunities computing technology gives workers to become more creative on the job.

The Bits Are Willing, but the Batteries Are Weak

Article Abstract:

The Aug. 14, 2003 power failure across the Northeast, Midwest and parts of Canada was a painful reminder that that data flow depends on electric flow, regardless of what computer device is used. Even battery-powered laptops need recharging. The expansive blackout interrupted considerable business activity that generates network data traffic?dependent upon electric power for reaching its destination.
