A subversive sympathy: the stories of Peter Taylor and the illusions they bring to life
Article Abstract:
The late Taylor, whose 1986 novel 'A Summons to Memphis' won a Pulitzer Prize, wrote a number of wonderful stories. His 'Collected Stories' of 1969 is aparticularly important work. His literary career is discussed, and excerpts from some of his works are presented.

A golfer describes playing on six of the 400 golf courses that Donald Ross designed between 1899 and 1948. Ross's courses are subtler and more interesting than modern courses. They include Shennecossett in Groton, CT, and Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina.

Crime novelist Ross Thomas created an impressive body of work that has most often been compared to that of fellow literary great Raymond Chandler. Thomas's stories were usually set in the early period of the Cold War, immediately after WWII.
