A tolerant nation's hidden shame: a federal study suggests that thousands may be victims of hate crime

A national study commissioned by Canada's Justice Dept found evidence that 9,000 hate-crimes are committed annually. Targets include Jews, Blacks, Natives, immigrants and lesbians and gays. A new law passed by the House of Commons imposes stiffer sentences on those convicted of hate-crimes.

Fall from grace: high-cost nuclear power loses popularity
Article Abstract:
Concerns about costs and safety have sent the nuclear power industry into a steep decline, with only 34 nuclear power plants under construction internationally at the beginning of 1996. The Shoreham Nuclear Generating Station in New York cost $7 billion and was never operated.
