The Australian Broadcasting Company tended to abandon quality considerations and focus on maintaining financial integrity in 1997, although they would have been better off reversing that strategy. Local worthwhile shows included 'RAW FM' and 'Children's Hospital.' 'Buddha of Suburbia' and 'This Life,' were strong imports from the UK, and 'King of the Hill' from the US showed brilliant writing.

The 1998 World Cup in France is remembered by many fans as the tournament with excessive red cards and penalty shoot-outs. Some have suggested staging the shoot-out before the extra time. Others suggest removing one player after another until goal keepers are left. Australia will host the World Cup in 2006, and may contend it is in a good position to suggest some better procedures.

The 1998 year was a period of popular shows that appeared to drive other shows out. It was also the end of shows such as "Seinfeld" and "The Larry Sanders Show." The federal election campaign brought charges of bias against ABC, but the broadcaster also had successes at the Australian Film Institute awards.
