AOL, Time Warner may hit DSL speed bump

America Online Inc and Time Warner Inc have forged a deal to merge their resources to immediately roll out a high speed Internet service. This planned service may not be as easy to provide as the two companies think, given the experience of other firms. It appears that existing providers continue to be unable to furnish the cable modem- or phone digital subscriber line-enabled, ultra-rapid, World Wide Web connections demanded by consumers. Providers cite this explosive demand and some significant technical challenges in deploying broadband as the reasons behind the ability to adequately furnish high speed Internet services.

Nortel to buy Xros for $3.25 billion

Nortel Networks is acquiring Sunnyvale, California-based Xros for $3.25 billion. Xros, is a manufacturer of a switching product that transmits data through the use of photonics to instantly beam light across glass fibers. The firm has not yet shipped the product but expects to begin selling the device in 2001. Nortel's acquisition of Xros is a part of its plan to expand its optical-networking business in anticipation of an explosive demand for bandwidth.

Redback Networks to buy start-up

Article Abstract:

Internet equipment manufacturer Redback Networks announced that it would acquire start-up Siara Systems for $4.3 billion. Redback's products manage high-speed Internet traffic on telephone and cable lines. It is acquiring Siara due to the latter's expertise in optical technology and staff who came from Cisco Systems, Hewlett-Packard and Nortel Networks. Siara is developing products that allow service providers to route Internet traffic swiftly and to facilitate deployment of new services.
