ATI Technologies Inc. co-founder Kwok Yuen Ho is awarded Canada's Entrepreneur of the Year award by award's founder and co-sponsor, Ernst & Young. Ho is also awarded the Ernst & Young's 1998 Ontario's Entrepreneur of the Year and Ontario technology entrepreneur. Thornill, Ontario-based ATI was founded in 1985 at Ho's garage, and has since grew to become a C$1.2-billion company, joining Canada's corporate elite. ATI President and Chief Operating Officer Ho, a native of Hong Kong, has a vision and possess traits of an excellent entrepreneur. ATI designs and produces high-speed two- and three-dimensional computer graphics chips.

Software maker leaps boundaries

A&L Computer Software Ltd., which started as a one-man entity in 1982, expanded outside Canada in 1997 by setting up its first non-Canadian dealership of its A&L Document Console software in Fallbrook, CA. The said program helps create the paperless office by storing and indexing documents ranging from charts to photographs for any firm in any industry. According to Alexander Yuan, the founder of the Richmond Hill, Ontario-headquartered company, it is the biggest supplier of medical administration software in the province of Ontario.

Watermate looks to tap into filtration market

Watermate Filtering Systems Inc, based in Kitchener, Ontario, is targeting to tap into Canada's water filtration market, which is estimated at C$50 million a year and dominated by Brita GmbH. The company boasts of a high- technology filter that can remove all bacteria and viruses without using chemicals. Watermate, with six employees, is currently building manufacturing plants in St Thomas, Ontario.
