AT&T to test fiber technology

Article Abstract:

AT and T Corp is slated to test fiber optic technology in Salt Lake City, UT, in preparation for its plan to bring digital television, telephone and high-speed Internet access to a quarter of the US market. The test, which will involve 50 to 75 households, is intended to improve AT and T's newtwork capacity and could possibly enhance the design of high-speed digital cable systems. CEO C Michael Armstrong stated that the Salt Lake City test could bring forth more efficient and cheaper cable telephony.

Telecom market prepars for unified messaging

Article Abstract:

Unified messaging, which enables users to send e-mail, faxes and voice mail to one digital phone number or mailbox, is poised to be the next big development in the telecommunications market. Unified messaging will reduce costs and boost convenience through less requirement by users to carry multiple devices such as cell phones, palmtop computers and pagers. According to Pelorus Group researchers Blair Pleasant, such mailboxes will increase to 9.6 mil in number across the globe by 2002.
