AT&T adds $1.50 fee for local, long-distance on 1 bill
Article Abstract:
AT and T Corp will charge an additional $1.50 from consumers every month to provide their local and long-distance charges on a single bill, a service that used to be free. AT and T's move follows a similar move by its major long-distance rivals, Sprint and WorldCom's MCI unit, which introduced the same fee. AT and T has announced that residential customers can avoid the charge by accepting two bills or they can get billed online and receive $1 off their monthly long-distance bills as well as a $25 gift certificate to retailer Amazon.com.

Despite competition, regional Bells still rule local lines
Article Abstract:
Regional Bells do not get much competition from rival long-distance companies five years after Congress ruled that local phone monopolies should open their markets to rivals. Obsevers feel that consumers are still several years from lower prices and better service promised by the Telecommunications Act of 1996. The reason cited is that long-distance telephone companies are being charged too much for access to the lines that regional Bell companies own.
