Activism on the rise

Article Abstract:

Anti-smoking movement started in the 1960s and has now gained considerable momentum. Medical evidence against smoking, research on the effects of second hand smoking and concern for clean environment have led to a strong worldwide movement against smoking. Several citizen groups have struggled against lack of political support and pressure from the strong tobacco lobby to build a public opinion against smoking. Pioneering work was done by Group Against Smokers' Pollution (GASP) in getting indoor clean air laws passed in Arizona and Minnesota. Nonsmokers' won an important victory when in the 'Shrimp versus New Jersey Bell case,' the court ruled that employees had a right to smoke free environment.

Hiring and firing smokers

Article Abstract:

Over 6000 firms have decided against employing smokers and the tobacco industry and certain civil rights groups believe that this decision is an infringement of smokers' rights. Organizations such as American civil Liberties Union (ACLU) claim that an overwhelming majority of Americans feel that smoking outside the organization's premises should not be criteria for denying jobs to smokers. However, anti-smoking groups such as, Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) feel that ACLU's stand is motivated by financial considerations. There are several legal precedents favoring smokers' rights as well as those favoring employees right to dismiss smokers.

Victories in the 1980s

Article Abstract:

Medical evidence against smoking and concern over the effects of secondhand smoking have led to a strong public movement against smoking. The 1980s have seen the anti-smoking groups win significant victories, such as the imposition of workplace restrictions against smoking and a ban on smoking on short domestic flights. However, the tobacco lobby is spending considerable resources to dilute the anti-smoking laws by projecting these laws as an attack on smokers basic rights
