Reply to Buck's review of 'Human Facial Expression: An Evolutionary View.' (response to Ross Buck, p. 393, this issue)

Article Abstract:

Ross Buck's assertion that the book 'Human Facial Expression: An Evolutionary View' has no room for emotion-based theories is correct. This is because it was written to forge a link between human communications research and the biology of animal signaling, an approach that is consistent with the paralinguistic ideas of pure communications theories. However, Buck missed these and other important points pertaining to facial neurology, inhibition and the definition of emotion.

CEO compensation rises as the downsizing ax falls

Article Abstract:

The downsizing trend in corporate America has been accompanied by corresponding increases in compensation given to company CEOs. A William M. Mercer compensation survey published in the Wall Street journal revealed the millions of dollars received by CEOs like Robert E. Allen and Philip B. Fletcher. Millions in stock options were also given. The trend raises questions regarding the need for stricter government rules on compensation.
