AlphaNet hangs it up after failing to find funds

Article Abstract:

AlphaNet Telecom Inc has filed for bankrupctcy protection on Feb 8, 1999, after failing to find an investor or buyer. The company also announced that will sell off its AlphaNet Hospitality Sytems subsidiary to an undisclosed buyer. AlphaNet, a wholesaler of long-distance telephone services, suffered financially as a result of technological delays, declining long-distance rates and increased competition from larger phone companies.

Bell deal signals end of national telecom focus

Article Abstract:

BCE Inc. will sell 20% of Bell Canada to Ameritech Corp. for C$5.1 billion. The deal is another step towards the globalization of the telecommuncations market, and signals the opening of the Canadian market to foreign players. The deal is expected to benefit BCE Inc. because it would allow the company to share R&D resources with Ameritech and leverage its equipment purchasing power.

Call-Net pulls up For Sale sign

Willowdale, Ont.-based Call-Net Enterprises Inc., which owns Sprint Canada Inc., has decided to not sell itself. A group of shareholders had prompted the telecommunications company to put itself up for sale about six months ago.
