The Canadian book industry always got only a small fraction of the sales gleaned by US publishers. But in 1997, the popularity of Canadian authors peaked at home and abroad. Publishers are optimistic and spending has increased. Book launches, and major promotions by sellers are increasing.

Yukon alchemy: a mine raises environmental concerns

Viceroy Resources Corp's Brewery Creek gold mine, located near Dawson City, Yukon, is the first Canadian mine to try large-scale heap-leach mining. The process uses cyanide to extract the gold from the ore. Environmentalists are concerned that the cyanide could leak into the water supply.
