Canada's various cultural affairs programs are preparing for severe budget cuts. The CBC, for example, is expected to absorb a 33% cut by FY 1998, while the department of Canadian heritage may have nearly a fourth of its budget cut by 1988. Canada's national museums also face substantial cuts.

'I've cried two rivers': Manitobans struggle to rebuild after the flood

Article Abstract:

Manitoba flood victims are claiming that they have been inadequately compensated by the government. While flood victims are entitled to a maximum of $100,000 in compensation each, the government has so far parceled out only $7,036 per applicant.

'People need a vision': Roch Carrier passionately defends the arts

Article Abstract:

Carrier is sad that it is so difficult for the Canada Council to find money to support emerging artists. Although the number of artists has grown tremendously, the council's budget was cut to $91 million from a high in 1992 of $108 million.
