Audiences fall as movie ticket prices rise

Article Abstract:

Motion picture exhibitors watched total theater goer attendance decline slightly by 1% in 1999 because of an 8.3% increase in ticket prices. The price increase to an average of $5.08 per ticket has been the largest since 1988. The 1% decline in theater goer attendance to 1.47 billion tickets sold was recorded even as the number of movie screens increased by 3000 from 1998 to 37,185 in 1999. Motion picture industry officials believe that the business will improve as costs come under control and the number of teenagers grows.
