Aviation inspectors warn of safety risks in merger

Article Abstract:

Merging Air Canada with Canadian Airlines International Ltd would create problems in passenger safety during the merger's early stages, according to the Aircraft Operations Group Assn, which represents 429 aviation safety inspectors at Transport Canada. That is because both carriers use different types of aircraft, and retraining the pilots and crews would take months. However, a spokesman for Onex Corp said the timetable for the merger should not be confused with the timetable for the integration of operations.

Ottawa set to open Asian air routes

Article Abstract:

Air Canada and Canadian Airlines International Ltd. received approval from the federal government to expand with new Asian routes. Air Canada will have more rights to fly to Hong Kong, but still is dissatisfied, saying it gained less than expected. The policy made by Transport Minister David Collenette on the affairs of the two airlines is intended to give balance between the interest of Air Canada to expand Internationally and Canadian Airlines' struggle for stability during a period of restructuring.
