This article describes the results of bloody rioting and terror in East Timor following the vote for independence there in August 1999 with Indonesia yielding to international demands for a peacekeeping force in the former Portuguese territory. Relevant details include plans for the participation of Australian troops among the peacekeepers in East Timor, and the long term effect that this participation is likely to have on relations with Indonesia.

Healing hands

Article Abstract:

The July 2001 visit of Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid to Australia indicates an attempt on behalf of both countries to try to repair the damage created most recently by the East Timor incident. Even before becoming president of Indonesia, Wahid's frequent visits to Australia, and other close links, indicate that he is a friend to the country.

In defence of debate

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the national defence debate in Australia with regard to neighbouring countries attitudes are presented. It will be necessary for the Howard government to take a positive lead role to avoid misconceptions of any tactless public comments.
